Practice, Practice and PRACTICE

Practising every day will help you memorise vocabulary and grammar. Try to learn something new every day. Don’t worry too much if you don’t understand something at first, with practice you will improve your skills and when you least expect you will start understanding more and more. Remember when I said that learning English is just like riding a bike?  That is correct; at first, when learning to ride a bicycle, everything is confusing; you cannot control the front or the back brakes, it is challenging to balance and so on. Therefore, if you practice daily, you will improve, and when you least expect, you will ride everywhere without even thinking about it.  Learning English is the same, and the first steps are confusing. You may think you will never understand or learn this language, but don’t worry. If you practice daily, you will learn English rapidly.

Focus and be positive when learning.

Over the years at Focus English School in London, we have helped thousands of students from young ages up to 75 years old. Many have learned to communicate effectively and attend university to obtain a degree or masters. Having a positive attitude towards learning will for sure speed up the process. If you have negative behaviour when learning, it will take longer, and you may not even learn English but anything in life.

Do I really need to translate everything to understand?

Beginner students: don’t worry too much about translating everything to understand. Instead, use photos to understand the meaning of words. As you know, many words have different meanings depending on the context of all languages.  For example: let’s say you don’t understand the words “take a shower” many students will go to a translator to understand; instead, go to google and type them, and you will see many photos explaining the meaning. By doing this technique, you will assimilate the words with the photo. It will for sure be much easier to memorise them. Learn simple words first. Practice what you learned today and tomorrow, and repeat the steps.  Sooner or later, things will click in your brain.

Intermediate to advanced students – at this level, follow the suggestions for beginner students but also use English English dictionaries. By doing this, you don’t only learn new words but will also become more familiar with day-to-day expressions. Think about your own language! When you don’t understand a word, do you translate? Not; you either ask someone to explain or look online. So, why should you do it differently in English? From today stop translating.

Speaking (repeat words and sentences out loud)

It is crucial that you repeat all English vocabulary you are learning many times OUT LOUD. By doing this technique, it will help you memorise the words and pronounce the words correctly.

Important tip: don’t worry too much about committing errors. It is perfectly normal to say things incorrectly. Many students are afraid of speaking because of the fear of saying something wrong. Therefore, stopping them from progressing rapidly when learning. When you commit a mistake, repeat it repeatedly, and observe the person’s mouth, lips and tongue when they say words to understand how they are pronounced. Sooner or later, you will realise your errors and start correcting yourself.

Writing and Speaking

Many students believe that to learn, they need to write words to memorise. That is not true. Let’s say you want to learn the numbers 1 to 10.
