One course, three levels

A1, A2 and B1 — all in a single course

Rather than enrolling on three separate courses, you join one continuous 120-hour programme that takes you smoothly from complete beginner to intermediate English. Students can start at any time — there's no need to wait for a new term.

We've built a method of our own to help students learn rapidly, and it starts from the very first level. In most schools, A1 covers only simple, limited questions. Our A1 is more demanding, built around real speaking practice for real situations — registering with a GP, applying for a job, talking to a landlord, and more — so you learn language you'll actually use in daily life, not just phrases for a textbook.

From there you move into A2, where you'll describe your background, your job and your local area, and handle everyday tasks like shopping and appointments with confidence. You finish at B1 — able to handle most everyday situations, give reasons and explanations for your opinions, and speak confidently for over two minutes on familiar topics. It's a complete method: speaking, listening, reading and writing are developed together at every stage, not bolted on at the end.

B1 is also the English level most commonly required for UK settlement and British citizenship applications, so finishing this course leaves you ready for that exam as well as for everyday life in the UK.

A1

Beginner — real-life speaking practice

A2

Elementary — routine, familiar tasks

B1

Intermediate — settlement & citizenship level

Our teaching method

Not a typical English course

The Focus English method is more demanding than a traditional course, and it asks for a lot more practice — because that's what actually builds fluency, not just familiarity.

More practice than traditional courses

Classes move at a faster pace and expect real practice between lessons — through the Focus English app, the AI tutor and structured homework — rather than relying on classroom time alone.

A1 that goes further

Even at A1, our beginner content covers more than a typical English course — more vocabulary, more structures, more speaking practice — because we want students progressing quickly, not lingering longer than necessary at each level.

Settlement & British citizenship

The English exam you need for a British passport

To apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (settlement) or British citizenship, UK Visas and Immigration requires proof of English at CEFR level B1 — speaking and listening. This is normally shown with an approved English language test.

Our course is built directly around this exam, so reaching B1 with us and being ready to sit your test happen at the same time — no separate "exam prep" add-on needed.

English is one part of the process — the separate Life in the UK Test and other eligibility rules still apply, and requirements can change. Always check the current guidance on GOV.UK or with an immigration adviser before booking your exam.

CEFR levels at a glance

  • A1 — Beginner Family visa extensions
  • A2 — Elementary Further visa extensions
  • B1 — Intermediate Settlement & citizenship

What you'll be able to do

A complete course — all four skills, properly developed

Nothing is left out. Every class builds speaking, listening, reading and writing together, so your English works in real conversations — not just on paper.

Speaking

Talk for over 2 minutes on everyday and unfamiliar topics.

Listening

Follow conversations, calls and short talks at natural speed.

Reading

Understand everyday texts, letters, signs and short articles.

Writing

Write clear messages, forms and short pieces about yourself.

By the end of the course, most students can confidently answer more than 3,000 everyday questions and are ready to sit their English exam for visas, settlement or citizenship.

Everything included in your plan

  • Live classes with expert tutors, face-to-face or on Zoom.
  • Full access to the Focus English app — grammar, pronunciation, listening, reading and writing activities, plus progress tracking.
  • AI conversation partner to practise speaking and listening 24 hours a day, whenever suits you.
  • Exam preparation built in for your visa, settlement or citizenship English test.
  • No registration fee — our price already includes the app, unlike many other schools in London that charge a separate registration fee.

Common questions

What English level do I need for British citizenship?+

UKVI generally requires CEFR level B1 speaking and listening for settlement and citizenship applications, usually proven with an approved English language test. Our course is built to take you to exactly this level.

What's the difference between A1, A2 and B1?+

A1 covers everyday introductions and simple questions. A2 covers routine, familiar tasks. B1 lets you handle most everyday situations and explain your opinions — and is the level UKVI requires for settlement and citizenship.

How long does the course take?+

Around 120 hours in total, covering A1, A2 and B1 in one continuous programme rather than three separate courses.

Can I study face-to-face and online?+

Yes — the same course runs face-to-face at our Harlesden school and live on Zoom, with morning and evening groups.

Is there a discount for joining more than one group?+

Yes — for both face-to-face and online study. Use the calculator above to see the exact price and saving for 2, 3 or 4 groups a week.

Does this also prepare me for the Life in the UK Test?+

The Life in the UK Test is a separate requirement and isn't a language exam itself — but it's only available in English, so stronger English makes it much easier to prepare for.

Is the app included in the price?+

Yes — full access to the Focus English app is included in every plan, at no extra cost.

When can I start the class?+

We've built our method so you can start at any time — there's no need to wait for a new term to begin.

Do I get a certificate at the end of the course?+

All of our courses prepare students to obtain either an official Cambridge or Trinity certificate. To get a certificate, students must take an exam and be approved, which costs between £150 and £200 per exam.

These are globally recognized qualifications. They will certainly put you at the front of the queue to run for office. They can be obtained anywhere in the world.

How does the 12-week membership discount work?+

Choose a minimum 12-week membership on any plan and get £30 off your monthly payment for the length of your membership.

The membership requires a minimum of 3 monthly payments and cannot be cancelled before those first 3 payments have been made.
